To just point one thing out, the man Uxbal was talking to at the end and beginning of the movie is actually Mateo, his son. It is meant to look like Uxbal's father but it's actually not. We know Mateo told Uxbal the fact about the owls and the man in the forest also said that. And we also know that Mateo smoked (the burnt mattress and Marambra said it) and that man also smokes.

I think Mateo is allowing his father to rest. Uxbal was so worried that his children would forget him after he died and that stopped his soul from "moving on". But Mateo shows up in the forest, reminding Uxbal of the owl fact and even does the "sea and the wind" bit, showing that he never forgot his father.

And lastly I believe the snowy forest is actually the Pyranees. Both Mateo and Uxbal never got to go on the trip and finally father and son can see the biutiful Pyranees together at last.

After seeing the movie, I must say that your entire blog entry on Biutiful is just brilliant & spot on. I enjoyed it immensely. MEDIOCRE it is NOT. You write so beautifully and are so very talented. I give it a "sobresaliente"!!!!

Here are some specific comments:

~The way you point out the language theme is amazing (i.e. the colored subtitles & comparison to Babel).
~ "Although the film progressively gets more and more tragic and depressing, it never feels insincere, overwrought, or too sentimental." Nice:)
~ "It’s about death, sadness, family, sickness, language, love, the afterlife, immigration, and sweatshops. That doesn’t even begin to describe it." So true!
~ The way you explain Uxbal's father's role in the film is awesome.
~ I love how you brilliantly discuss Iñárritu's themes: use of death, screwed up family dynamic, language & language barriers.
~ I love how you describe the significance of the family meals at the kitchen table.
~ Your opening paragraph (& closing!) are great!
~ Your whole "mediocre" theme in the 2nd paragraph & how you carry it through til the end is so interesting.

From beginning to end, this entry on Biutiful is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great movie, what a great blog!

Excellent writing and analysis. I only saw The King's Speech and it was a very good film. It will likely win. Colin Firth will likely win and Geoffrey Rush SHOULD win. He shows more without doing much of anything than most actors when they really try.

I suspect Jeff Bridges won't win because he won last year for being a crusty old man so doing a similar role won't help.

Fortunately we don't have a violence filled downer Scorcese film for everybody to fawn over this year.

This was awesome, I really want to see it. I wonder a lot if I would raise my kids to be religious or believe in Santa. It's disappointing to find out the truth- but like you say we delude ourselves our whole lives (a theme I've been thinking over recently) and isn't part of the wonder of children that they can totally believe in things like that? Because when you're older you can't? I don't know.
